So, I found this coupon in the Sunday paper:
NEW! Fresh Roasted (should be a hyphen there)
Thin-Shell
almonds (why this isn't capitalized, I don't know)
The coupon actually has three steps to show you how to open them.
The Blue Diamond site actually has a whole FAQ page about how to open them and eat them.
Now, my question, which isn't on the FAQ page is:
WHY!?
Why would you EVER want to buy almonds in the shell????
After living for 5 years with a walnut tree and doing a LOT of shelling, I don't see why anyone would ever choose to shell their own! I mean, it's not like pistachios where they are so expensive to shell by machine, that you have to buy them in the shell. And it's not like leaving the shell on here gives you any additional nutritional value.
If anything, leaving the shell on gives you the lovely experience of shards of shell getting embedded under the corners of your fingernails or scratching your palms.
Thanks, Diamond
Perhaps the company just charges more for the bag, which includes the weight of the shells. Nicer profit for the company, less nut for the consumer.
ReplyDeleteOh, I think it's worse than that. This way, they don't need to run their shelling machines. Think how much they save in just taking the piles of nuts from outside and washing them once and throwing them in a bag with some powdered flavoring.
